René Bohne - Workshop/Talk

We had one of our final workshop/talks today by René Bohne from the RWTH Aachen University in Germany. He discussed many interesting topics from Arduino to Fab Labs. If UL could develop a Fab Lab, this would really open up some interesting concepts to prototype, and put UL on the Map as the only college in Ireland to have one.

There was a little bit of Déjà vu on the Arduino side for some of us, but Réne seems to know it inside out and could explain all questions put to him in detail.

Project

Although I will be discussing my own project here in further detail in the coming weeks, it is tentatively called an ' Urban Explorer Device'....focusing on the many potentials it could have, such as Locative Art & Media. Link

Project Presentation

Project Presentation due tomorrow for the whole class.

This should be a great way to see what everyone is doing & discuss the issues they may have encountered so far or what they perceive may be potential problems to overcome.

Another beautiful day..

Wow..the weather has been great all week, clear blue skies really help to lift the mood and give the body much needed energy to get through the volume of work in the course..it's all coming to an end soon, at least the taught elements are, then onto the summer for the final semester when the thesis and project will be created. Fun times ahead... ; )

We had another class with Ruth Crean on Thursday last where we were taught the basics of sewing using scrap fabric and re-using old materials such as buttons to make an item. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I designed a small bag with the materials she provided ...pictures to come soon...

Shan Zhai

Came across this term today researching my project..never heard it before..it was mentioned in a product teardown that had some nice features I would like in my own project..very interesting..!

Shan Zhai

Got this today..another book to read.

Lots of reading to do...

Digital Technologies and the Museum Experience: Handheld Guides and Other Media

Slide on Handheld devices from Slideshare

Interesting points made here:

The eyes want to have it.

Although I would argue a case for 'The ears want to have it.'  I believe in  viewing the actual object in its natural state where possible, and not on a device.Although control through a screen I believe is important.

Project is back on track...

Project is back on track...need to tweak some elements of it though... a description of it will up soon ;)

Mark Weiser was recommended to me today, I like his idea that    'The best computer is a quiet, invisible servant '

Project Proposal

We finally received some feedback on our project idea's today..looks like I may need to completely re:think my original idea and make it more interactive...My thinking cap is now firmly on to consider the implications of this...lots of research to do...

Upcycling !

Nice talk today by Ruth Crean, she is the designer from Nice Day Designs. She designs a lot of her clothes on the idea of Upcyclimg, something which we have to do for the Contemporary Art module.

The idea for us is to pick something from the Hunt Museum in Limerick city and make a model of it using old electronic parts etc..should be some interesting results...!

'Net Book Pro'

My Asus Eee Pc 901 was gathering dust, so I decided to figure out how to install Apple OS X and turn it into a small 'net book pro'...not too difficult any more following tips on Insanely Mac.

It works great so far..a few niggles but when I have more time I will sort those out ;)

Project picked..

A project which I will be working on for one of the modules is Space & Place in new Environments..this should be an interesting and engaging topic..looking forward to collating all the texts/pdf's/video's etc that have accumulated on my hard drives over the years to use for this project, as well as mining the web...

Urban Sifter - Whois

I am a student in UL/Limerick studying for a Masters in Interactive Media. This blog will become a resource for content related to projects and areas of interest related to digital/interactive media.

One of the best websites currently out there is City of Sound.

Eventually this little blog may take root, grow and blossom...spreading itself far and wide through the conduits of the web..hopefully ;).
